Lavender

(Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender needs no introduction — its violet spikes and unmistakable sweet, resinous perfume have soothed humanity for millennia. Prized above all for relaxation and serenity, this Mediterranean herb is woven into teas, baths, smoke blends, and ritual smoke alike. Its calming aroma is traditionally associated with easing tension, lifting the spirit, and inviting restful sleep. In any blend lavender contributes a fragrant, floral grace and a quieting, almost meditative softness.

Tradition & Ritual

The Romans perfumed their baths with lavender — its very name from lavare, to wash — while medieval folk strewed it across floors and tucked it into linens to cleanse the air and ward off pestilence. Long burned for purification and protection, lavender has graced wedding rites, sickrooms, and altars, its smoke and scent called upon to bless, calm, and consecrate sacred space.

Scientific & Medicine

Lavender flowers are rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, aromatic compounds widely valued for their calming, relaxing influence on body and mind. In a smoke blend a pinch lends a sweet, floral perfume and a soothing softness; brewed as tea it is gently fragrant and traditionally used to ease tension, quiet a busy mind, and welcome restful, untroubled sleep.

Legends & Myths

Folklore once held that lavender harbored the asp of Cleopatra, lending the flower an air of perilous beauty. Christian legend says Mary draped the swaddling clothes of the infant Jesus over a lavender bush, blessing it forever with its heavenly scent. Across Europe it was strewn at thresholds and worn as a charm to draw love, peace, and protection from harm.

I add just a whisper of lavender to evening blends — too much and it turns soapy, but the right pinch makes the whole thing bloom into something restful and kind. Its scent always pulls me back to slow summer dusks and the hum of bees in the garden.

Cautions & Contraindications

Generally very safe. Large amounts may cause drowsiness. Use moderately in pregnancy. Rarely, topical use causes skin sensitivity.
