Mullein

(Verbascum thapsus)

Tall and stately, mullein rises from roadsides and meadows on a single silver-furred spire, its leaves soft as a lamb's ear. Long honored as a base herb in ceremonial smoke blends, mullein is prized for its mild, airy character and clean burn. Its gentle, near-flavorless nature carries the breath softly, traditionally valued for soothing and opening the chest. A grounding companion herb that lends body and smoothness to any blend.

Tradition & Ritual

Across Europe and Appalachia, mullein stalks were dipped in tallow and burned as torches to light processions and ward off the dark — earning names like hag's taper and candlewick. Folk herbalists wove its woolly leaves into smoke blends and steam, and Indigenous North American traditions adopted it as a respiratory ally, smoked ceremonially to honor and clear the breath.

Scientific & Medicine

Mullein leaf is rich in soothing mucilage and saponins, traditionally used to calm and support the lungs, throat, and respiratory passages. In a blend it acts as a soft, slow-burning base, mellowing sharper herbs and adding gentle volume without overpowering aroma or taste. As a tea it brews into a mild, faintly sweet infusion long associated with easing coughs and soothing irritation.

Legends & Myths

Old European lore held that mullein guarded travelers against evil spirits, wild beasts, and curses — sprigs tucked into shoes or pockets for protection on lonely roads. The Roman name candelaria recalled its use as funeral and ritual torches. In some tales, Ulysses carried mullein to shield himself from Circe's enchantments, the plant standing as a quiet sentinel against dark magic.

Cautions & Contraindications

Always strain mullein tea through fine cloth — the tiny leaf hairs can irritate the throat. Generally well tolerated.
