Red Raspberry Leaf

(Rubus idaeus)

Red raspberry leaf is the green, faintly tannic heart of the beloved berry bramble — a humble, nourishing herb long honored as a woman's ally through every season of life. Mild and grounding, with a flavor reminiscent of black tea, it is prized as a gentle uterine tonic and a mineral-rich daily brew. In smoke and tea blends, raspberry leaf lends a smooth, earthy, astringent base and a quiet, steadying nourishment.

Tradition & Ritual

For centuries, midwives and wise women across Europe and North America have passed down red raspberry leaf as the great herb of pregnancy and birth, brewed to tone the womb and prepare the body for labor. Indigenous peoples used the leaf to ease childbirth and soothe the stomach, weaving this generous bramble into the oldest traditions of women's care and seasonal healing.

Scientific & Medicine

Raspberry leaf is rich in tannins, flavonoids, and minerals like iron, calcium, and magnesium, with the alkaloid fragarine traditionally credited for toning the uterine muscles. Valued as a nourishing reproductive tonic, it steeps into a mild, pleasant tea akin to a soft black tea. In a smoke blend its smooth, earthy astringency makes it a fine, grounding herb to round out and steady a mixture.

Legends & Myths

Greek myth tells that raspberries were once white, until the nymph Ida — nursemaid to the infant Zeus — pricked her finger on a thorn while gathering the fruit to quiet his crying, staining the berries red forever with her blood. From her the plant takes its very name, idaeus, and its old reputation as a tender, nurturing herb of mothers and children.

Raspberry leaf is my quiet workhorse — never flashy, always nourishing. I brew it daily as a grounding base tea, sometimes with a little nettle, and fold it into blends when I want an earthy steadiness underneath the more fragrant herbs. It's the herb that simply takes care of you.

Cautions & Contraindications

Widely used in pregnancy, though best begun later in pregnancy and with a midwife's or provider's guidance. Generally very gentle and well tolerated.
