The dark, glistening pods of a climbing orchid — the only orchid to yield an edible fruit, and one of the world's most beloved fragrances. Cultivated by the Totonac and later the Aztec peoples of Mesoamerica, vanilla — tlilxochitl, the black flower — was blended into sacred cacao drinks offered to royalty and the gods. Treasured as a ceremonial luxury, it scented ritual beverages and offerings, its rare fragrance a mark of devotion and abundance long before it perfumed the wider world.
