Maté

(Ilex paraguariensis)

The bright, invigorating leaf of a South American holly, Maté is the green fire of the gaucho and the shared cup of friendship. Grassy, smoky, and pleasantly bitter, it carries a clean, lifting energy — wakefulness without the jangle. Naturally caffeinated and rich in nourishing compounds, Maté brings vitality and a bold, herbaceous brightness to teas and daytime blends, a sociable herb of communion, alertness, and warm circular ritual.

Tradition & Ritual

For the Guaraní people, Maté was a gift of the gods and the heart of community. Shared from a hollow gourd through a metal bombilla, the cup passes hand to hand in an unbroken circle of welcome and connection. Across Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil this ritual of sharing remains a daily sacrament of friendship and belonging.

what it offers

Scientific & Medicine

Maté contains caffeine alongside theobromine, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, valued for clean, sustained energy, mental focus, and vitality. Herbalists associate it with stamina and a balanced lift gentler than coffee's. In a blend it adds a grassy, smoky, briskly bitter brightness and an enlivening, awakening character well suited to morning and daytime ritual.

the old stories

Legends & Myths

Guaraní legend tells of the moon goddess Yarí descending to earth, saved from a jaguar by a humble old man. In gratitude she gifted him the yerba maté plant so that he and his people might share its warmth forever — a sacred herb of friendship born of mercy, given that no one need drink the cup of welcome alone.

Bear Originals

Maté is my morning circle, even when I drink it alone. That grassy, smoky lift wakes me clean — no crash, no jitters. I pass the gourd whenever I can, because this herb was always meant to be shared.

Cautions & Contraindications

Contains caffeine — moderate intake and avoid late in the day. Limit during pregnancy. Very hot, frequent consumption over years has been associated with throat irritation.
