Holy Basil

(Ocimum tenuiflorum)

Known across India as Tulsi, the Incomparable One, Holy Basil is a fragrant, clove-scented herb radiant with sacred warmth. Its leaves carry notes of pepper, mint, and sweet spice, opening the breath and lifting the spirit. Revered as an adaptogen that helps the body meet stress with grace, Tulsi brings a bright, uplifting, devotional quality to teas and ceremonial blends — a plant of light, breath, and quiet exaltation.

Tradition & Ritual

In Hindu tradition Tulsi is worshipped as a living goddess, planted in courtyard shrines and tended with daily prayer. Brides and devotees offer it to Vishnu and Krishna; its leaves and stems become sacred beads. For millennia it has been the herb of the threshold — grown to purify the home, bless the breath, and consecrate ritual.

what it offers

Rich in eugenol and aromatic oils, it carries antioxidant, warming qualities. In a blend Tulsi lends a bright, spicy-sweet, clove-and-pepper aroma and an uplifting, opening character that enlivens the senses.

Legends & Myths

Legend tells of Tulsi as a devoted woman transformed into the sacred basil so she might forever remain close to her beloved Vishnu. Hindu lore holds that no offering is complete without her leaf, and that a Tulsi plant guards the home against sorrow and ill fortune, drawing blessing and divine presence to all who tend her.

Around the fire, Tulsi is my heart-opener. A few clove-bright leaves in the pot and the whole circle seems to breathe easier. I keep a plant by my door, the old way — a little goddess watching the threshold.
